Just because it's Froday:

"Elijah looks angelic but his beauty of spirit is what makes his Frodo leap out of the screen. Unalloyed goodness is one of the most difficult attributes to act." ~ Ian McKellan

it's an odd thing: i never *see* Elijah when he's portraying Frodo. They truly must be quite akin.

I know exactly what you mean, he simply becomes Frodo as if they were one and the same:)

never seen him disappear into any other role. Not like that. It's quite odd. It would give me the frights if i didn't think it was so wondrous.

Oh, my. That caught me rather unprepared, and I find myself reaching for a tissue! Can you imagine higher praise, or from a more admirable source?

>Can you imagine higher praise, or from a more admirable source?<

Exactly! And Ian was the only person, at least that I'm aware of, who spoke out about the fact that Elijah hadn't been nominated for an Oscar for his portrayal of Frodo.

Beautiful pic and beautiful quote.

Sir Ian sees deep, more than everyone else.

You may remember my fan history. I didn't fall for Elijah after watching FOTR for the first time in the movie theatre. I rarely go to the movie theatre, and I knew about the novel (Only, when I had attempted to read it as a teen, I only ever came as far as Tom Bombadil, before my patience left me and I abandoned reading it - the plot wasn't progressing as fast as I wished for), and, yes, I thought the actor portraying Frodo had something remarkable in him. Yet it was the same reason as for me abandoning reading the book - I was disappointed that they took a whole movie to let the movie progress only as far as Lothlorien - the quest was far from having actually achieved much up to this point. I thought - they will need two more movies to bring the story to an happy ending ? And they'll need two more YEARS until the story fully will have been told ? Without me !

So I forgot about it until 2005, when I arranged a DVD trilogy watching session when I had been vacationing over at a friend.

And THEN it hit me, and I was smitten completely.

Anyway, what I was trying to say is, that Frodo (as portrayed by Elijah Wood) is unlike any other role / character in movie business. Frodo is young, innocent, life-loving, yet at the same time wise, responsible, caring, brave, self sacrificing, sensible enough to know about his weakness(es), struggling with the Ring's influence on him, and more.

Elijah, at that time, looked, yes, angelic, but there's more to him than just a pretty face. Frodo even more so (wig and all - I don't know if there's anyone that has naturally such an amount of thick, curly hair), but again, there's more to Frodo than just his pretty facade.

Both have an inner beauty, a soundness of character, of values - they are both outstanding example of Mensch (or, in German, Gutmensch) !

Yet it is not as simple as that. If Elijah essentially WAS the kind of person Frodo was meant to be, then it wouldn't be called acting, would it ?

Elijah, with his 18 years of age, was able to portray all that was making up the literary figure of Frodo, and Elijah had to draw on much more than what his own life experience had been at the time. That's what I call acting, and Elijah's achievement is something I'd call almost superhuman, and that's what impresses people when they watch the movies for the first time, yet they can't put their finger on it.

The defining element of good acting is, that it seems to be naturally, effortless, you hardly notice it's there. The same way that people naturally assumed, Elijah was British, and wouldn't have expected that he had 'faked' the dialect / accent. - And that may be one of the reasons Elijah didn't get an Oscar for his performance - by all rights, he SHOULD have got one !

Beauty of spirit - yeah, Elijah possesses it (even when he is a potty-mouthed jokester at the same time, so NOT an angel at all), but Frodo is even more 'pure' than Elijah, and to bring that to screen is a true achievement. And it is even more of an achievement if you consider Elijah's age at the time !

Thanks for making me reflect on that subject !

Happy week-end !

Love,

- Karin.

Thank you Karin - that was very interesting.

I think you're right in describing Elijah's achievement as 'almost superhaman' - I mean, where did it come from? He was just 18 years old and not very worldly-wise. And yet he inhabited that character as if it was the most natural thing in the world. And yes, I totally thought he was English - how could he be anything else sounding like that?!

Yes, he really, really should have got an Oscar and I will always be angry that he didn't. As I mentioned to Newleaf, Ian M was the only one I know of who spoke out about this

I think it's Elijah's beauty of spirit that sets him apart and above so many of his peers, and it radiates from him which makes him so much more that just a very beautiful face:)

Hope you're having a wonderful weekend! xx
