I've enjoyed reading the many posts for the poetry meme. I don't need to go far to see two of my favourite verses - they reside on the profile page of our very own annwyn55!! The words are brief, and I'm not sure if they're part of something longer, but I find them so enchanting:

A magic moment I remember:
I raised my eyes and you were there.
A fleeting vision, the quintessence
Of all that's beautiful and rare.

A. Pushkin

Between me and the world
You are a gauze curtain, a mist
A lamp shining into my dreams.
You are a bamboo flute, a song without words
A closed eyelid carved in stone.

Bei Dao, China 1949

I love, love, LOVE that verse by Pushkin! I had to go look up the whole poem and save it. Beautiful. Thank you; I learned something wonderful and new! :D

It's so lovely, isn't it? I'd be very interested to read the whole poem if you could give me the link. Thanks:)

Here's the one I found last night, using the verse you posted. (And it's "hear," not "near," in the second stanza.) But of course it was originally written in Russian, so there are various translations out there that strive to retain the meter. This one seems to be the more "official" one (published on more formally academic poetry sites), but I don't like it as much as the other one.

(Oops, messed up the HTML. As usual!)

Thanks so much for this. It's beautiful and I agree with you, the first one is by far the best:)

Yay! I'm so chuffed that we have the same taste in poetry!

This is the version I took the verse from. I like this translation best because it makes the most sense - take 'prey' instead of 'pray', for example.

The other verse is 'A Bouquet', by Bei Dao. Absolutely beautiful, and if you listen to the voices, you'll hear Frodo and Sam alternating. :)

Many thanks Annwyn, both poems are absolutely beautiful. I didn't really expect to like them in their entirety, so it's a pleasant surprise to find that I do. And yes, reading 'A Bouquet', I understand exactly what you mean about Frodo and Sam:)

A totally perfect choice for this meme!! I adore the first one so much!! I like the longer poem, but these first four lines say it all!
