For anyone who has followed 'A Journey With Frodo', I wanted to let you know that I've had to shelve it for the time being. This is for several reasons but mainly because the trouble I have with my shoulder means I can't sit at my pc for long stretches like I used to. I have to restrict myself to several short sessions which is really not conducive to working on something like 'Journey'. I don't want to say I'm abandoning it altogether -that makes me too sad because I was really looking forward to completing it and having the whole thing to look back on. But - I started this in 2006 and my progress has been so slow that I think it would probably be another seven years before I complete it!! The situation with my shoulder is that, having had it x-rayed, I was told that I do have arthritis in the joint. I'd already had a steroid injection which did nothing to help so I was sent to a physiotherapist. She informed me that I also have frozen shoulder. She gave me some exercises to do and also some literature about acupuncture which I think I'll try. However, she did say that
this condition does usually cure itself eventually although it can take a couple of years. So, if ever my shoulder does improve considerably, I might find myself able to really get to grips with 'Journey' again and get it done!! I hope so.

I am still as fascinated and enchanted by Elijah's journey with Frodo as I've ever been, as well as Elijah's post-Frodo career. I may sometimes pluck a moment from his LOTR days to post about so that I don't miss it too much!!

Oh, dear Paulie, how very sad. For you and also (I'm being selfish here) for me. Having discovered the LOTR films and Elijah so late in the day, your 'Journey' has helped me so much in getting to know him. I have enjoyed your posts immensely and I want to thank you for all you did!!

But the most important thing is your health and well being. I hope the physiotherapy is going to help and that you're not in too much pain. Take care and very warm (((hugs))).

Thanks Ambree. I understand your disappointment, I feel really disappointed myself at not being able to finish it (so far, anyway). Many thanks for the interest you've shown in my beloved project, your feedback has always been most welcome:)

I'm so sorry to hear that you're going to have to take a hiatus from this wonderful project. I've been a "lurker" on this project for over a year now I think (I left 1 comment some time ago), but I just had to let you know how much I've appreciated all of the work you've put into 'Journey' and what a great job I think you've done with it. It's put a lot of smiles on my face and it's been so much fun to re-live the old "glory days" of the LoTR. Thanks for all of the hard work and love that you've shown here! : )

I hope your shoulder heals well. I completely understand how you must feel, since I have carpal tunnel syndrome in my right hand which is very hard to deal with as a math major in college! So take all of the time you need to get better.

I won't forget to check in with 'Journey' every now and again, just in case. Thanks again and I hope you feel better soon,

- Lindsey

Hi Lindsey, many thanks for your kind comment. I feel so disappointed, for myself and for anyone who has been following, not to have been able to complete 'Journey' yet. Hopefully I'll be able to return to it in the future.

I live in hope of my shoulder getting better. Sorry to hear you have carpal tunnel syndrome, being a student it must make life very difficult.

The important thing is your health and well being. Take care of yourself, heal and come back to us even stronger and more inspiring. (If it's any comfort, Elijah will probably still look like he does today years from now when you return!!)

Oh, I won't be going away anywhere!! I'll still keep up with Elijah's doings on a daily basis and I'll continue to make the occasional short post. It's just the work that 'Journey' entails that's the problem, particularly editing all those screencaps. Hopefully I'll get back to it one day. Many thanks for your comment:)

Just take good care of yourself, my friend. I know very well how pain and stiffness can slow us down whether we want to or not.

*hugs*

I'm sorry you're having so much trouble with your shoulder, dear. Of course your well being is the most important thing. You can always be proud of what you've already accomplished on A Journey with Frodo. I hope your shoulder shows improvement sooner rather than later.

I'm so sorry to read all of this, Paulie! Like ambree40, I'm sorry on two levels -- the selfish one, because I love your "Journey" posts so very much, and the more important one, for you. I'm so sorry you're experiencing the kind of pain that's getting in the way of things you want to do with your life. I'm glad to hear the prospects are good, though, if somewhat long-term.

Your "Journey" posts so far have brought me so much joy. It's so wonderful to revisit those years and those experiences, which were so important to me, as they were for so many of us. Thank you for all the long, hard work you've put into them, and for sharing it all with us. I hope you'll get the chance to do "mini stops" along the way, and that when you're feeling better, you'll be able to continue the Journey!

Many thanks Robin. I'm so disappointed, for you and others who have been following 'Journey' - and for myself - not to have been able to complete it. I do hope I can get back to it before too long. I'm so glad to know you enjoyed what I did manage to complete:)

until 3 months ago I had never heard of this condition, but I have it too. fortunately my non-dominate shoulder, and, I believe, a light case of it. I just want to let you know that it does get better. I've been having physical therapy, which is some simple movements to practise as I can, and massage(by the phys therapist). I have to say the massage is doing wonders although it'a fairly painful while he does it. Also, there are different stages of this, the first is the painful one, the second isn't much pain at all, just the loss of motion, and the last stage is the slow return of motion.
I don't know how the arthritis will cause your experience to differ.
I would do the acupuncture too, but I'm doing so well without it, I don't want to spend the money, but if you are not doing so well, give it a try.
very best of luck and don't get discouraged.

Many thanks for this interesting info. I read online that it is usually the non-dominant shoulder which is affected by this. That did actually get me wondering if the physio had got it right. She seemed to base her diagnosis on the fact that there was absolutely no give in my shoulder at all when she applied pressure, it was immovable, at least in certain directions. I actually hope she is right because then I know it will eventually get better, except for the arthritis. I'm definitely going to give the acupuncture a go, especially as we can now have it free under the National Health Service!! Thanks again for your help:)

I quite understand why you've had to abandon your pet project, "Journey", for the time being. I know how much it means to you.

Just concentrate on yourself and I hope your shoulder improves with the exercises and maybe acupuncture...

Good heavens! Jan-u-wine alerted me to this post. I have come to rely on my emailed notifications and they haven't been happening for a couple of weeks, not for comments in my own LJ and not for other people's LJ's that I have on watch.

I am SO SORRY! Sorry about your blinking shoulder, of course, though I'll keep my fingers (shoulders?) crossed for recovery that is sooner rather than later. But I'm also sorry about the hiatus this will make in your massive ongoing work. Is anyone else doing a project like this, with this much research and attention to detail? I think not.

But, as Primula Baggins said above, "You can always be proud of what you've already accomplished on A Journey with Frodo." That is absolutely true. ABSOLUTELY. You have done standing ovation work on this series.

Well, I'm still sort of flustered. I don't think there's any other series I've looked forward to as much as yours. Thanks so much for it.

And TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Many thanks for your very kind comments, Mechtild. I never imagined having to put 'Journey' on hold before reaching the end. I hate disappointing those who have enjoyed it, and I'm so disappointed myself - I was really looking forward to completing it and then working my way through to make various edits and improvements. I really hope that I can get this thing sorted out, as well as my other health problems, so that I can return to it and devote the time needed to complete it.

Thank you again for your comments and for your interest and enthusiasm for my beloved project in the past:)

Oh my dear. I can well imagine how heart-breaking it is for you to have to put 'Journey' on hold. I know how much you love working on it. I had hopes of one day seeing it in print :) But Frozen shoulder does get better and at least you know now what the problem is. I hope the physio and the acupuncture help. Take care my friend Xx

Thanks Belle. I never imagined having to put my project on hold, I just thought I'd keep plodding on with it until the end. It's the large amount of screencaps which have to be edited which make it really hard work, along with the searching to make sure I've missed nothing from that time!! It's very hard to concentrate when you have constant, nagging pain but I really hope I'll be able to return to it before long:)

I'm so sorry to hear about the trouble with your shoulder. I don't think I've heard of anyone before who had arthritis in the shoulder, but I have heard of a "frozen" shoulder. I hope the exercises and acupuncture help.

I had a bout of sciatica for several months last summer and it was terrible. I'd never experienced chronic pain before, but this simply wouldn't let up. I can see how people get addicted to pain meds. I finally tried physical therapy twice a week, plus home exercises, and that did the trick. It went away...never to return, I hope.

Thanks Yeux, I've booked an acupuncture session for the 16th - really hope it'll help.

I know sciatica can be really bad so I'm very glad to hear you've managed to get the better of it:)
