Subject:Elijah in Prague
Time:04:25 pm
Current Mood:Pondering
Well, after lots of confusion, I now know for sure that Elijah is in Prague - he arrived on Friday. Thanks to Allie, who lives in Prague, for this info. I hope he enjoys himself there - it looks a beautiful city.

I keep pondering about an article I recently read, which now I can't find. More precisely, I keep pondering about something Ngila Dickson said at the torn oscar party - that she'd seen almost every cast member naked - to which Elijah and Dom nodded in agreement. I mean - did she see them really naked??

When I read the recent snippet on torn about 'The Hobbit' it struck me yet again how very generous Elijah always is in his praise of others, and how very different to the rather bitter words of Christopher Lee in a recent article. Lij had this to say about Ian Holm's portrayal of Bilbo:

""I wouldn't want to play Bilbo having already played Frodo - it would be strange for the fans and for me."

"Also, I don't think you can out do Ian Holm's performance."

"Any actor would be afraid to approach the role after seeing what Ian Holm did with it as it truly is perfect."

Of course, Christopher's remarks about young actors appeared in a German mag and so may have been mis-translated, but if he did say that then it does sound very much like sour grapes for his scenes being dropped from ROTK and it also completely contradicts what he said previously in a UK mag - he was quoted as saying, in conversation with Ian McKellan (at the LOTR Cannes event)words to the effect that the film industry will certainly be ok as long as its in the hands of people like Elijah.

I wish I could look forward to 'The Hobbit' more - but I can't because there's no Frodo - and Lij is right, it wouldn't be right for him to play Bilbo and I wouldn't want him to. But still - if only Frodo was in it ...

Ah, so he is in Prague - thank you for that. And it is a beautiful place - I'm sure he'll have a great time there.

It would be weird having Elijah in The Hobbit - Frodo just doesn't belong there, plus on a purely practical note, I think it would be a very bad move for him career-wise - just as he's fighting so hard to get away from Frodo. It'll be a wonderful film, and it'll be interesting to see who ends up playing Bilbo, but you're right - it won't be the same.

She's the costume designer, right? Then you can bet she's seen 'em all naked. Really naked. She costumed them right down to the underwear. When you're in theater, you get used to having the costume person constantly adjusting things, reaching up your skirt or whatever. And if she tells you to strip, you strip, no questions asked. It goes with the territory! *grin*

Wow! That's, er, very interesting - now if only we could see the Frodo striptease on the dvd extras - but I suppose thats a bit much to ask:)

Heh. It's not like that, unfortunately. All very clinical, I'm afraid. More like going to the doctor's. All the costumer cares about is if the thing fits and how it looks. The body is secondary! *grin*

Prague is a lovely city. I hope he comes back with happy memories of his time there. The people are so friendly too.

I think Christopher was hurt by what happened with his role in ROTK but I hope the article was mis-translated. I'd hate to think of him being less generous than someone almost a quarter of his age.

Now I'm confused..

I just read the other day that Elijah was presenting an award this coming Sunday.

From Torn:

Wood to Present Award in Kansas Sunday
6/05/04, 6:43 pm EST - Xoanon

Harriet McClelland, Mandan, has won the National Spirit Of Service Award. She was selected from 500,000 RSVP volunteers in the nation. McClelland is a team member of "Alternatives to Violence" program at the North Dakota State Penitentiary. McClelland and Loretta Lord, RSVP director, will be at the National Leadership Conference in Kansas City, Mo., where Elijah Wood, star of the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy, will present the award Sunday.

Of course he can always just hop on a jet. ;-)

I hope CL's comments were not aimed at our boys, I just can't imagine him saying that after praising them so much in the past (especially Elijah). If he is bitter for being cut out of RK I doubt he would take it out on the youngest cast members.

I'm with you..I would be looking forward to The Hobbit a lot more if I knew "Frodo" was going to be in it!! Lij playing Bilbo would seem odd, but it just won't be the same without beautiful Frodo.

Apparently someone got their wires crossed with that report and it was Sean, not Elijah, who made the presentation. I thought when I read it that it sounded more like something Sean would attend.

CL seemed to be referring to young actors in general, so that would include our boys, but I can't help but feel there may have been some misinterpretation, it seems a very tactless thing to say and he'd know it wouldn't win him any friends.

Well that does make sense about Sean.
I hope Elijah enjoys Prague but I'm hoping he'll be back in the States towards the end of July!!!

I've heard the filming will go until August 6.

And yes, Allie told me too that he got into Prague last Friday. Hope he has some fun there. He's suppose to be filming 5 days a week. If that's so, then he'll have some down time. Those film shoots can be very long days. Sometimes 12 - 15 hours per day. I know that'd kill me.

Hmm.. August 6th? Doesn't look good for those of us attending the Comic-Con in san Diego.

Thanks for the info! And yes, the fiming scedule would kill me too! Lij must be used to it by now. ;-)

Must mean he'll be back in town sooner than thought.

Actually, it's unlikely that Ian Holm would be in "The Hobbit" either, considering his age and especially since that's not getting made any time soon. There is one way I can envision that he'd have a cameo role, though -- if they do it as a flashback, with Bilbo perhaps telling it as a bedtime story to baby Frodo. Shouldn't be that hard to find a child with big blue eyes who could fit the bill, but they'd have to get someone else to play younger Bilbo on the adventure. I also bet that if they really wanted to, they could get Elijah into it (if he was willing, that is, although I personally think it would be a terrible mistake on his part) -- similar scenario, Bilbo telling Frodo the story while he's sick in bed with the flu or something contrived like that.

I think Frodo was 12 when his parents died by drowning in the Brandywine river at Buckland. And then who knows how old he was before he went to live at Bag End with Bilbo. So I don't think a really little child would work.

About the age thing, you do know that Frodo in the book was suppose to be 50 years old when he went on the Quest? And of course, Elijah was much younger. This could be explained away by the life-span of Hobbits I suppose. Or perhaps by the influence of the ring on Bilbo (and perhaps an influence on Frodo?). So age might not be a problem if Elijah wanted to play Bilbo.

They can do a lot with costumes and makeup. I think Elijah could play Bilbo if they put a golden wig on him and dressed him more like Bilbo (whatever that might be). But it would be hard to overcome the Ian Holm Bilbo influence.

And I agree that Elijah probably wants to look forward, not backward. If he tries to get out of the hobbit thing and then goes back to it, it will be very hard for him to change his image. He's struggling with that already, I think.

Maybe not a real baby, but since, as you point out, Frodo was supposed to be 50 in the book, and hobbits don't even come of age until 33 anyway, a 12 year-old hobbit would probably look like a young human child.

They can do a lot with costumes and makeup. I think Elijah could play Bilbo if they put a golden wig on him and dressed him more like Bilbo (whatever that might be). But it would be hard to overcome the Ian Holm Bilbo influence.

I think it would be harder to overcome the fact that the audience would take one look at him and scream FRODO! They could do a lot with costuming, but unless they manipulate him digitally, there's not much they could do about getting rid of those gorgeous big blue eyes (perish the thought!).

I think another reason Elijah wouldn't want to play Bilbo is that he's often said that Frodo has become a part of him, eg on the David Letterman Show "I've taken Frodo on as a piece of me", - so somehow it would just seem wrong.

How did Allie find out Elijah was in Prague? Have there been any news reports over there about him? I hope she can share anything she finds with us.

I thought that was incredibly humble about Elijah saying he wouldn't want to play Bilbo. He is such a lovely person. So different than most Hollywood types who are only looking out for themselves.

Who would be good to play Bilbo, though? If they make it within, say , five years or so they would need a somewhat older actor to play him wouldn't they? I always had thought Michael J. Fox would have been a good Frodo, and I heard that PJ asked him to play the part, but his illness prevented him from being in the film and thus we got our incomparable Elijah! But could MJF play Bilbo? That might be interesting, if he could manage it.

Hobbsy,

Allie posted at the EII board at IMDB and at the Yahoo group about Eli landing on friday. She said some fans had already met him, and that he was well known in their country. I hadn't realized he was so popular in the Czech republic? I hope he doesn't get over run on set with fangirls like in London.

If you want, Allie posts to my Yahoo Group. She lives in Prague and has said that some people have already met Elijah there. I hope we get some pictures of him there. I miss those frequent pics we got when he was doing The Yank.

Go to Yahoo groups and search on Everything Is Illuminated.

*mourns* I knew I was in the wrong profession!

Elijah's such an incredible man, and a credit to his profession. It fascinates me that he never seems to seek the limelight, but is never less than gracious when it shines on him.

If CL actually said those words, he comes across as an arrant hypocrite, 'cause his praise of Elijah's acting is well documented - heck, it's on the Movie Guide, even!

*huge sigh* I didn't think it possible, but I think I love Lij more and more each day...
