A couple of quotes from the Sunday Times interview with Lij:
On meeting Lij for the first time:
He was 20, but he seemed like a kid; tiny, his skin almost translucent, peach-fuzz about his chin and upper lip, boyishly over-eager to please, but also terribly nervous, chewing gum non stop, smoking a lot, his nails bitten down.
On meeting him for this interview:
With large sunglasses and long, thin sideburns, he looks like any Venice hipster, but as soon as he takes off the shades, his huge, sail away blue eyes could be spotted from the shuttle Discovery. He carries himself with much more confidence and ease these days. Dressed in a generic white t-shirt and blue jeans, his almost black hair mussed up into a faint peak, he looks taller and more comfortable in his skin. He doesn't light up a cigarette until we have finished eating and, thankfully, seems to have lost his gum-chewing habit.
"spotted from the shuttle Discovery"!!! Love that. _grievousangel has very kindly transcribed the whole interview. I must say I'm amazed it actually gives the name of the place where Lij dj's "every other Tuesday". There are two pics - both ancient. On the cover its Lij at 17 - adorable but 7 years old, for God sake!! Its one of the black tshirt ones, I think from when he was publicising 'The Faculty'. Inside its the water-kicking pic from some years back.
