This is terrible - they're going to close The Chocolate Fish cafe!! They can't afford the massive rise in costs. This is a tragedy - it's one of the shrines of the LOTR fandom. I'm happy that I managed to visit it but I feel very sorry for those who are planning a future trip to NZ and won't get to see it. All the cast loved to eat there - PJ and Barrie Osbourne even had some important discussions about filming while sitting at one of those tables. In one of the video ads they mention how, when Liv arrived one day in shades, etc, obviously hoping not to be noticed, Elijah called over to her that she didn't need to worry about that here because everyone was used to seeing the cast there. And apparently Viggo, if he was filming further along the coastline, would sometimes turn up at Scorching Bay in a rowing boat!! Ah well - I'll always have my Chocolate Fish keyring, and I hope Elijah still has his:) Read the sad story here:

Just read about this on ODQ's LJ. I never ate there but I did take pics and spend time on the beach below it. And Waitarere gone too - wonder whether it was for forestry reasons?

We did have a meal there but I can't for the life of me remember what it consisted of!! I think I was too excited just to be there. I don't know the reason for Waitarere going, but I shouldn't think that Red Carpet Tours or even the tourist board would be too happy with this state of affairs - I feel there should be some sort of preservation order on these places!!

I quite agree! A preservation order, yesyesyes!

Not sure about the Waitarere forest, perhaps it was just due to be felled as part of the forestry programme, but surely the fact that it was a LOTR film site would have counted for something...? Seems not :-(

Absolutely - LOTR is the main reason for the huge increase in tourism in NZ and has made them a massive amount of money - it seems madness to start destroying the film sites!!

I'm with you totally! I suppose this was in a working forest at Waitarere, but just that bit could have been spared, surely!

I got this in an alert.. it's so sad! It's like the start of the decline. If you've read janejanejane account of her recent trip to NZ, you'll notice that there are a few places that have been lost or taken over.. It's like the era is coming to an end! *sigh*

I can't bear to think of any of those lovely places disappearing - as I said to Mole Caz - they ought to have a preservation order placed on them:)

Let's hope this petition mentioned on theonering.net gets started online so we all can sign to save The Chocolate Fish! Life does go on, but for LOTR fans these places are very special and should be preserved!

That was nice of Jane to send you some things from The Chocolate Fish - she went there again recently during her second visit to NZ - seems she was just in time!!

I am!!!

The keyrings are no longer available - they couldn't get them any more, something to do with their supplier. Nothing was mentioned about closure when we were over there last month.

When Bellewood sent me the link to the Dominion Post article I was gutted! Then I had an email from Raewyn and Vic James in which they told me about The Chocolate Fish closure...

Just hope this petition on theonering.net gets off the ground. If it's online we can all sign it!

We were very lucky that you were so generous and got us keyrings when you first visited! It's a shame that it's closing, I'm glad at least that you and Chris got to go there again recently.

I hope they make the petition online too so I can sign it as well!

I know - the Chocolate Fish keyrings were no longer available to buy, but nothing was said about an imminent closure when we were there last month. They still had T shirts though. If it does close they'll be collectors' items - I should have bought one! Chris did. Maybe we'll try to contact them...

This is so sad! Bellewood passed on the article link to me and then I had an email from Raewyn and Vic James of Red Carpet Tours in which they mentioned it too.

The Waitarere Forest is gone (where they filmed the Elves leaving Rivendell and Arwen turns back after seeing a vision of Aragorn and their son) after all the trees were felled recently. Fernside (Leaving Lothlorien site and Gladden Fields where Smeagol kills Deagol at the beginning of ROTK) is up for sale so its future is uncertain... And now our beloved Chocolate Fish cafe likely to close! It's a national institution, for goodness sake!

Someone on theonering.net mentioned a petition so I hope it gets started, preferably online, so we all can sign it. I certainly will, and hubby Chris and son James too! Maybe everyone involved with LOTR filming will as well.

No! It's as bad as the Tasmanian government letting the businesses log so much. There won't be anything left in the end! :(
