Subject:A Journey With Frodo ~ Edits
Time:10:40 pm
Current Mood:shingly
We were supposed to be going away for 3 days today - a little treat for my husband's birthday - but I found out yesterday that I have shingles!! I actually knew before I went to the doc's that I had it - the rash had appeared on Monday morning after two or three days of other symptoms. He was full of good news - told me I'd now have a flu-type illness, it would get worse before it gets better and will last for 3 to 4 weeks:o( It is most definitely not recommended!! Thank goodness for Nurofen Plus - I'm just living from one dose to the next at the moment:(

Anyway, I have made a few edits to the chapter of 'Journey' posted yesterday and to the previous chapter. I'll put them behind the cut

The additions to Chapter 19 'It's a Wrap ... Or Is It?' have been provided by karin_woywod. Many thanks Karin:) They include:

1) A really great scan by morebliss of Elijah, Dom, Orli etc helping to load the ancient plane they had to fly in. This is actually from Brian Sibley's PJ biography but in the book it is only very small and not very clear.

2) A much better version of the pic of Elijah at Milford Sound.

3) A better view of the Frodo action figure which Karin found on Flickr - the pic is by 'marybluefairy'.

The additions to Chapter 18 'Capturing Magic' have also been provided by Karin:

1) A little pic of Elijah's calligraphy practice - in this one he's practising Frodo's name.

2) A pic of those tantalising letters which Elijah wrote, as Frodo, to each member of the Fellowship. I had known of the existence of these and had been searching for them frantically without success - Karin found them on the site of the official ORC photographer who took the photo. Sadly, they are unreadable - unless anyone out there possesses the necessary technology!!

I do have various other small edits to make to other chapters but I'll do those a little later:)

I remember that Daniel Reeves showed lots of slides of various calligraphy samples during his talk at ORC, and this photo is obviously a photo of one of those slides that was projected onto the big screen. It will be impossible to see these any clearer, IMO.

Thanks for the other cool items, Karin. I enjoyed seeing the one of them loading the plane, especially.

So sorry about the shingles. Isn't that an odd word for an illness? Sounds like something one would put on a roof!

I know someone who had them, and they aren't fun. I hope the medicine helps you. *hugs*

Happy birthday to your husband, too.

I think Daniel showed those same slides at ELF in 2006 - my memory of it is a bit hazy though. I have a feeling he doesn't intend them to be read by anyone else.

Shingles is a strange word - I must try and find out why it's called that.

Happy birthday to your husband, too.

Thank you:)

Oh, no, I'm so sorry to hear you have shingles. I know how painful they are. Thank you for posting the links to these updated entries. I hadn't seen chapter 18 before, so it was great to be able to see it.

Thanks Belle. They are extremely painful - I really don't feel like doing anything - except looking at my computer of course. There's always a plus side to everything and this means I have a good excuse for more computer time - although I do actually keep nodding off while I'm on it!!

You have my upmost sympathy - I've had shingles and it's NOT fun. *gentle hugs*

If there is any drainage at all that is when you can infect others so be extra careful.

Thanks for the edits - those are all wonderful additions. How I wish we could see the content of the notes that Elijah wrote as Frodo to the other members of the Fellowship - what a wonderful gift that must have been!!

I hope the pain will ease for you soon - *more gentle hugs*

Many thanks - I think you do need to have experienced this to know exactly how awful it is. How long did yours last?

I don't think Daniel has ever intended to reveal the contents of those letters - at cons and in his workshop they are always hung too far away to read!! So tantalising!

*hugs*

My shingles lasted about 3 weeks I think. Fortunately it wasn't a large area but it was right on my waist so it was hard to wear underwear, pants, etc.

I was also fortunate that I didn't have any long-lasting pain after the shingles subsided. When my Mom had shingles her pain lasted a lot longer than mine did - but it did go away.

I hope the area affected isn't a large one and that you'll feel better VERY soon. *gentle hugs*

P.S. Have you had shingles before? You sound as if you recognized the symptoms when they began to appear. My neighbour had shingles and it was hell for him. I hope you are not brought that low. That was a long time ago; maybe the medications have improved by now? For your sake, and all sufferers of the condition, I hope so.

No Mechtild - I haven't had shingles before but as soon as I saw the rash I had a feeling that's what it could be - when I looked it up on the internet all the symptoms described were what I'd been experiencing. It is indeed hellish and getting worse - the rash is now turning into blisters and feels rather like burns - then there's the tiredness, the loss of appetite amongst other things. I've been given antiviral tablets to take for a week - I suppose I just have to be patient. Many thanks for your concern:)

((((((((((((Paulie)))))))))))) - just a pretend hug, since it would feel so awful if it were a real one!

Oh, dear. From what you have said, it sounds like things are as bad as they were for our neighbour. He said he just about went around the house (he didn't go anywhere, of course, if he could help it) wearing nothing or practically nothing as much as possible. I think he had to apply some kind of tarry stuff to it, then he had to wear a t-shirt and some sort of loose pants, but it was awful.

I suppose I just have to be patient.

You're forced to, alas. In my neighbour's case, it passed, and he's never had it again, but he'll never forget what it was to endure it.

ah, good glad you are getting all the treatment you can....Get well soon. I am trying desperately not to get ill....I am at the moment stuck with very crappy health insurance. And naturally I have been exposed to the Flu, bacterial meningitis and Shingles all in a week, but I suppose if I came down with any of the above it could be considered (workmans compensation.) Still with my current job if I am out of work I don't get paid at all...that would be catastrophic.

About the shingles : Very nasty and painful - poor you ! I hope the doctor gave you antiviral tablets, they have to be taken as fast as possible, every hour counts ! And the shingles may come back again and again, every time your immune system is very low.

Be careful with human contact at the moment, because you can transmit chicken-pox to anyone who hasn't had them already !

I hope you'll recover soon and that there aren't any painful aftereffects in the months to come ! Fingers crossed !

*hugs you tight*

Love,

- Karin.

Thanks Karin. Yes, I have to take 5 antiviral tabs a day for 7 days. Oh dear - I don't relish the idea of it returning:(

The doc did mention to avoid children who hadn't had chickenpox - although on the internet it said anyone who hadn't had it. Not that I feel like doing much mixing at the moment!!

Many thanks for your concern:) *hugs*

Ever had a cold sore? I've heard it is a similar sensation with Shingles only not on the lip...I can only imagine how painful it must be....since Shingles tend to form along nerve pathways it must really hurt like a "Mutha"...

I do hope you don't suffer too much. A friend of mine went down with shingles about 5 weeks ago and was poorly for about a week but has come through remarkably unscathed.

Hope you and hubbie can have your little holiday when you feel better.

Ouch, shingles. I've had those. I was glad to read you are on antivirals, as they are supposed give quite a bit of relief. When I had shingles (not a huge area but extremely painful) the doctor said it was too late and the drugs were very expensive. At a checkup a month later he asked if I would take them had he prescribed them. I told him definitely, as at the worst point I was mad with pain and ready to have someone take me down to the back forty with a shot gun and put me out of my misery. Young guy, good doctor, just the only time he seemed blase about my problems (I did't know if I had ever had chicken pox and we had discussed getting tested for it as a new vaccine was available), but my response about suicide shocked him. He later prescribed the meds for a friend who consulted me a few months later about a huge iron shaped rash on her back (shivers at the memory), very quickly I might add.

I had them on my tummy and lived in a nightshirt or in a bath for weeks. I had to avoid any air movement around my tummy, as even a few degrees temperature change either way caused pain - even a slight breeze over my skin doubled me over. My neighbour had them on her face and in her ear - she didn't know what she had - and attributed it to a spider (like I did), poor thing.

If you haven't sound out already, shingles is a reactivation of the chicken pox virus, which , once you've contracted it, lies dormant in your nerve roots in your spine. Exactly where it is in your spine detremines where on you body it arises later in life, usually as a response to stress, radiation, cancer etc. In my case it was lumbar/lower thoracic, in her case cervical (neck).

I hope you don't get any complications, such as post-herpetic neuralgia. I didn't feel right for months, but it did go away eventually. In the meantime, take it easy, please!

I am quite shocked that your doctor didn't give you antivirals - I thought that was just the norm!!

I have it on the side of my neck, top of my chest, shoulder (all on the one side of course, which is always the case) and a couple of patches on my arm. I was worried I was going to get it on my face as the rash seemed to be creeping round my ear and I was getting pain on that side of my face, round my eye and particularly round my ear. Thankfully it hasn't happened - yet!!

Given the extent of your rash I am SO glad you are on antivirals.

The doctor I saw said it was too late, as the rash appeared five days earlier and the antiviral is only effective if administered up to three days after the rash appears. I thought my problem was a spider bite, as we have a couple species round here that can give a nasty bite. By the time individual blisters appeared, I knew it wasn't, but it was too late for the meds.

Take care of yourself! Hope it goes away fast *crosses fingers*

I'm so sorry to know you're not well. Just a few months ago my hubby's elderly uncle had shingles on his face. He's normally a very up-beat person, but he looked so poorly when I saw him. The pain and discomfort were really showing, but I'm happy to say he has recovered now. I hope you will feel much better very soon.

Happy Birthday to your hubby, and hugs to you.
