Subject:TEN YEARS!!
Time:09:14 pm

11 October 1999

“On October the 11th, NZ time, principal photography began as it has continued: Unpredictably! Nobody expected that the film crew and the four main hobbits would quietly invade a corner of one of the capital city’s parks for a week. Suddenly an area of the hilly pineforest on Mt. Victoria right near central Wellington was fenced off by security guards, and the hobbits’ flight from the Shire began. At the same time, the four Hobbit actors began the long process of becoming the inseparable friends that they are today. If this dynamic comes across in the film, that will be something that Tolkien would have applauded." (theonering.net)

“‘The first day of filming’, recalls Elijah Wood, ‘we were all nervous, and I know Peter was nervous too. There was also a tangible sense of excitement amongst the actors, the crew – everyone. This was the beginning. The beginning of a journey that seemed like it was going to go on for ever. The end was so far away that it didn’t exist. The idea of beginning this journey with the four hobbits was fun for us because we’d already become quite close – but it also seemed really appropriate. It’s in the hobbit’s nature to be excited and full of life. So to start with that atmosphere was really cool.’ “ (From 'Peter Jackson : A Film-Maker’s Journey' by Brian Sibley)

Ten years have passed since that momentous day and how fitting was it that just two days ago Elijah and Billy showed up at the FOTR concert in New York. I'd love to know if they were aware of exactly what they were doing ten years ago.

I think I'd probably have spontaneously combusted if I'd been at the Radio City concert on Friday night. I've been lucky enough to see Howard Shore conduct the LOTR Symphony in London and it was magnificent. But the NY concert would have surpassed even that - to see FOTR up there on the huge screen, with a live orchestra playing - and to have Elijah, Billy and Howard walk out on stage at the end and realise that they had been sharing the experience with us!! No words.

Ten years. It's unbelievable. I'm glad that Bill and Lij were together ..and Howard too ( i'm not sure he was conducting btw.. ) and i have no doubt that they knew the significance of the occasion, which may have contributed to the reason they were there. My feelings are so very mixed right now. I'm happy that they were there, but so utterly sad too..

You're right, Howard wasn't conducting, it was Ludwig Wicki!! And the weird thing is that at one time I knew that but then completely forgot and kept thinking it was Howard - I suppose because it would be just so perfect!! I'll have to edit that - thanks for pointing it out.

Yes, I know what you mean. I just wanted the whole LOTR thing to go on forever:)

Ohh - wouldn't that have been perfect!! Perhaps at one of the future concerts - fingers crossed:)

It really must have felt that way!

Yes, and I remember at the end Elijah said he'd love to do it all again but knowing what he knew once it was over. Of course, at the beginning they had no idea of how successful the movies would be:)

a lovely post for a cool autumn day. :)

it's hard to believe it's been 10 years because this experience has never really ended even after the shooting has. when another 4 years have passed marking the final film's release, it's still going to be hard to believe, because i feel it's just going to keep on going. elijah will be in his stepping into his 30s and i'm sure he'll still have a connection of what he was doing in october of 1999.

What a perfectly wonderful photo. It just doesn't seem possible that it's been 10 years. Those were such exciting years. I wish we could do it all over again.

This is totally off topic, but you're English and I have a question. I have been watching Brideshead Revisited (the original from 1981) on DVDs. I had seen it on TV many years ago and loved it. I still love it. My question is how much money if 5 "bob"...10 "bob" and 5 "quid"...10 "quid?" Is that slang for pence, pounds, etc.? It's used a lot in tavern and pub scenes in Brideshead.

Ohh, if only ...

Yes, bob and quid were slang terms for money. A bob used to mean a shilling in old money. Since we went decimal there is no such thing as a shilling so the term 'bob' has died out. The equivalent in new money is five pence. So 10 bob = 10 shillings in old money, or fifty pence in new. And quid means a pound - and the term 'quid' is still in use:)

What were we all doing 10 years ago? I had a 9 month old baby and was pretty much oblivious to anything else, LOL! I certainly had no inkling that such a momentous undertaking was just beginning. Thanks for this look back across the years! :)

Neither did I!! I think the first I ever heard it referred to was some time during 2001:)

Any chance you could post it at nzstories?

Thanks for posting this, Paulie. It really is hard to think it's been ten years. And what gems so many of them have been for me as a fan. I love that picture of the three of them. I sure wish I had been there. :)

Thanks Mechtild. I would love to have been at that concert too - and I'm seriously thinking about saving up for ROTK in two years time! But ... there is something so special about 'Fellowship' *sigh*

Ten years - it's really hard to grasp, isn't it?

I must admit I almost missed it. I'd thought about it some time ago - but it arrived so quickly after that thought!! It would have been great if all 4 hobbits had been there - but in two years time they'll be doing ROTK (I assume as they're doing TTT next year)and that will be coming up to the 10 years anniversary of the release of FOTR. I'd love to think they'd all show up for that. I'd also love to think we could save enough to go - am thinking about it!!

What a great photo, Pauline. I'm so pleased to know that Elijah and Billy turned up to share this special evening with the wonderful Howard Shore. Did they actually appear on stage? I'd love to see the audience's reaction!

Thanks for sharing.

It's incredible to think that it's 10 years since the start of principal photography on FOTR...

I'd have loved to be at Radio City too... *sigh*

10 years - it's difficult to grasp, isn't it!! And there will be lots of other 10 year anniversaries cropping up over the next few years - end of filming, release of each film etc.!!

Oh, to have been at Radio City on Friday night ...
