Apologies to anyone wondering what had happened to this chapter! I had hoped to get it out before Christmas but with the usual last-minute Christmas panic had to admit defeat. And the New Year hasn't had the best of starts for us, mainly due to illness, then more illness and now ... more illness!! But this is no place for tales of woe - so, finally, here is Chapter 31 which covers the Oscars of 2002, my own night-long Oscar vigil and Frodo's arrival at Bree.
For anyone unfamiliar with my pet project, 'A Journey With Frodo' (a work in progress) is the story of Elijah Wood's experience in becoming Frodo, from back in 1998 when the LOTR movies were just a whisper up to the triumphant Oscars of Feb 2004. In reliving Elijah's journey, and mine, I am using everything I can lay my hands on - behind-the-scenes material from the various dvd's, magazine articles, books, internet sites, tv coverage, word-of-mouth info, etc. Previous chapters can be found here:

| I rewatched the trilogy with my daughter during the winter break, and it was such a pleasure, all three of them. Frodo (of course) and Strider are magnificent, and the sequence when the Nazgul skewer the wrong beds is amazing, a case where the movie can out-do the book without a word being spoken.
Thanks always for your journey posts, they are great. | (Reply) (Thread) |

| (here via Mechtild).....what wonderful memories you bring back, Paulie. Although it hasn't been all *that* long, it seems as if it happened in another life....a magical season which was upon us, and then *gone* like errant fire-flies.
At first, I, too, was puzzled and angry at the lack of the Academy's Oscar sense. But upon reflection, I realized that a golden trinket (of a statue) is but a little thing compared to having lived within the beautiful spirit of Frodo Baggins, thinking his thoughts, feeling his fears, donning his love like the rarest of gems. I think, perhaps, that Elijah found his award even before any of the movies ever saw a screen. His "little shadow", will be a part of him as long as he lives.
Thank you so much for calling up the lovely spirits of those times, Paulie.
I do hope that you are feeling much better now. Please take care!

I believe that too, and it makes me happy. You're so right, Elijah doesn't need that 'golden trinket' and neither do we - it would make no difference to how we feel, and if others can't see it, then that's their loss!! I've always thought that if Elijah ever wrote a book about his life, "Little Shadow" would be the perfect title! This is the term he used when he was interviewed in Prague back in 2004 - "Frodo will always be my little shadow".
Many thanks, jan - I'm so glad you enjoyed this chapter. And I am feeling quite a lot better today thanks:)

| I didn't know much of the first oscar show, so lots of this is new for me. FOTR should have least won best picture and best director ! And why wasn't Elijah nominated ? Even looking back, winning all those oscars for ROTK it's not right Elijah didn't get what he so rightly deserved. Thanks, love, a great chapter as always XXX | (Reply) (Thread) |
| Thanks Pop, glad you enjoyed this chapter:)
I'll never understand why Elijah wasn't nominated, but of course we don't need a 'golden trinket' (to quote jan_u_wine) to confirm how we feel and neither does Elijah, bless hime! | (Reply) (Parent) (Thread) |
| *squees at all the lovely Sean and Elijah pics* I'd love to watch that interview! Do you know if it's available anywhere? I couldn't find it on YouTube.
Gosh, Elijah looks so delectable in these pics! :)) Thanks for another wonderful entry in your series. I hope you're feeling much better now. *hugs* | (Reply) (Thread) |

| YAY!!! A new chapter!!
And a great one, too. Like many others who have commented, I must say FotR is also my favourite movie. I so love that first "for your consideration" picture, Frodo and Sam hiking. I think I've said it before: I could have easily and gratefully watched six more hours of Frodo, Sam, Bilbo bustling around Bag End, smoking pipeweed on that cosy bench and dealing with Lobelia.
Oh and I had no idea that Christopher Lee was so passionate about the missed Oscars for Best Picture and Best Director. Go and haunt them, Christopher!
I love the goodie bag interview! The reporter asking silly questions, and Elijah and Peter are so cool, the gang from New Zealand, indeed... I wish I had watched the Oscars back then. But I haven't, so I missed Elijah's online presentation, Andrew Lesnie's hug and that sweet, open, heart-warming smile. Thank you for sharing this with us now!
The Bree scenes: "Our business is our own", Frodo's interaction with Butterbur at the counter, Sam attacking Longshanks and Frodo sitting upright, sleepless, alarmed, curious .. love these scenes! As a fan of the book I am only 99% happy with Bree, but I was and still am glued to the screen when watching this.
And thank you so much for the link to te interview!! I downloaded it and I was grinning because they made Sean stand behind Elijah just like he was hiking with him in the Shire and walking behind him in Rivendell. Still, you were not at all 'submissive', as you said in an interview, Sean, you were just your Frodo's fiercest friend, Sam.
Belated Happy New Year to you, dear NotAlone!

| OMG, he was so gorgeous at the Oscars. And I agree with you that he was overlooked for a nomination. I couldn't believe what a wonderful job he did to be snubbed at Oscar time. | (Reply) (Thread) |

I know - I will never understand it:( | (Reply) (Parent) (Thread) |
| Love the shades!~ This was always my favorite of the trilogy as it dealt almost entirely with Frodo. | (Reply) (Thread) |
