Fear me. I have PowerDVD. I can now do screencaps.

To be honest, it was already on my pc when I bought it over 2 years ago. The first dvd I tried was - here's a surprise - FOTR. The blue warning message came up, followed by the logo - then nothing. Couldn't find out what the problem was so abandoned it. Until a few weeks ago I decided to try again but this time I tried one of the discs from the Appendices and it worked! But this is the weird thing - it will play all the discs from the appendices, it will also play a couple of non-LOTR films I've tried, but it will NOT play any of the actual LOTR films. Does anyone understand this?

Anyway, I've been capping like a mad thing. These are mainly from the FOTR discs, mostly Fro, some Lij. Oh, and there's one of Sean and, er ... one of a cake. Some are a bit on the fuzzy side - please bear with me, I'm a capping novice. Also, Photobucket say that any images over 250k will be resized which could result in bad distortion. Well, these were massive but they don't look distorted to me - do they? Although they may be a bit on the blurry side compared to the originals. And ... there are rather a lot:) Right, enough with the technical stuff ...

Something really seems to be amusing Elijah here!

Elijah's 19th birthday cake!! Doesn't it look scrumptious?

Leave him alone you bullies!!

I love the way Sean is looking at Lij here!!

Holy cow. Some of these Frodo shots are too gorgeous for words. Would you mind if I made an icon or two out of them?

I know what you mean about the hair - it frames Lij's beautiful face in the best way possible. I'm glad to see he's growing his hair again in RL - wonder if he might progress to a few curls:)

Isn't that fun? All the expressions you can catch that otherwise go by too fast.

Sometimes he looks like just a person, but in some of these he looks too beautiful to be real.

It is fun. You know, for a long time I'd only ever watched the dvds on the tv, when I started playing them on the computer I was amazed at how many little things I'd missed. Sometimes he looks like just a person, but in some of these he looks too beautiful to be real. Exactly! I sometimes wonder how people managed to work with someone looking like that - I wouldn't have been able to take my eyes off him!!

Jesus, these are wonderful. Almost made me cry. I must watch the these again. Thank you for sharing them.

Oh, and that picture of Sean? I totally agree with how he's looking at Elijah. Wrote a whole story about that outfit and that look... called 'The Hug Puppy'.

Almost made me cry

I know the feeling. And those scenes in the trailer are just the best. Makes note to read 'The Hug Puppy' asap:)

My favourites are the ones of him standing up in the make-up trailor. He doesn't yet have his wig on and you can see how wonky his hair is.

I also love the one of Ian Mckellen running his finger on Elijah's palm. I would love to know what they were talking about :) My poor besotted imagination has them flirting with each other, but surely that wasn't it...

And, the cake - all this time I thought those were itty bitty carrots on his birthday cake. I didn't realise they were strawberries. Much better.

right-click-saved the one of Ian and Elijah, and we'll see if I can't work it into the next Powderhorn installment

Gosh, he looks so young in these. I loved the one with the four hobbits standing.

I forget how much make-up and costumes they had to go through all the time. Every single day they had to have all the wigs, feet, costumes and makeup applied and taken off, for all that length of time. I can imagine they were glad when that was over.

As for the capping, I don't think the software necessarily makes it blurry or not. It's just the point in time you capture the frame. If the frame is blurry, so will the cap be. These are good I think. I had the same problem when I wanted to cap and upload some items. The capture software makes then so large. I could have gone into a separate program and resized them, but I just didn't want to bother at the time. That is one solution. Otherwise, you have to wait for them to upload. For me that is a long wait.

Thanks for these. It was fun reminiscing.

I loved the one with the four hobbits standing.

So do I - trouble is it came out rather dark so I had to lighten it which seemed to result in a rather grainy effect. That pic, and the others taken by the horse & cart, as well as being for the dvd were part of the 'Vanity Fair' photoshoot - and were the first pics of the hobbits ever seen by the public.

I think the long time they spent in make-up also had a very positive side. Its probably the time they got to know each other really well and, of course, it gave Lij a chance to indulge his passion for his beloved music before the long days work.

I didn't realise the pics would come out so large - I'm really confused by this. I mean if Photobucket reduced them to 250k, and they were all bigger than than to strat with, then you'd think they'd all be the same size!! I think I have a lot to learn about this sizing thing!!

Pauline, I am now officially dead. You have just killed me. I too have the power of PowerDVD!!! I have done some of those, but you have some new ones there .... swoooooooooooon!!!

The blurry ones are because the actual frames are blurry. And when I do caps I usually go through them all and re-save them as .jpg as they are much smaller than bitmap - but visually they look identical. Fiddly though, but it helps.

God, he is so beautiful. How many times have we said that???????????

Julie - can you play the actual LOTR films on your PowerDVD? As I mention in my post, I can only play the Appendices and I just can't work out why. And these are .jpg!! I didn't realise how big they'd come out. There's really a lot I don't get about the sizing of pics. And yes - beautiful. You know, before I knew Lij, I don't think I'd ever applied that adjective to a man before:)

**SCREAMS**!!!!!! MY STILLS!!! I SEE MY STILLS!!!!!(I have 8X10's of Frodo that are on the board in the 1st two pics) I know one of the things that they were used for now-as reference for the Sideshow/WETA Frodo sculpture! That has to be Ben Hawker sitting next to Elijah. How cool is that? I must have missed this somehow on the DVD. omg

These caps are wonderful..

Frodo is so beautiful. My stupid dial up hasn't let me open all of them but I am going to keep trying!

Ah yes - I recognised them as being some of the costume shots which were sold on ebay. The second one in the top row I have as my desktop - someone once described it as being "almost frightening in its perfection" and I know exactly what she meant:)
Btw, those first two screencaps aren't from the main dvd - they're from the 'Gollum' dvd which came with the exTTT dvd - the version with the Gollum statue:)

Pauline,

These are wonderful. Thank you for doing this - I keep seeing details that I missed before even though I've watched the appendices more times than I can count!

My god, the thing that strikes me every single time is just how much he glows.

Thanks - glad you enjoyed them. I seem to see something I've missed every time I watch the appendices - for instance, that far shot of the four hobbits posing by the horse & cart I only really noticed when I was doing these screencaps. We are so lucky to have all this. And yes, he glows - he really does:)

I can't play the movie discs in my pc either, and the appendices work fine. Must be something with the way they encoded it.

I did wonder if it was something like that - its so annoying!!

And to completely change the subject - I was recently discussing your wonderful pic "A Little Rest" (my favourite piece of Frodo/Sam artwork ever!!) with a friend & explaining that it was based on a pic you'd seen of soldiers during WW1. Do you happen to still have that pic (the one of the soldiers) on your pc & if so I wonder if you'd be kind enough to email me a copy. I think I did have it once but it must have gone when my pc crashed. It would be much appreciated. My email is faculty99uk@yahoo.co.uk.
