I've been reading so many differing reactions to the pics of Elijah in Cannes. I've decided it doesn't really matter that much what he does to himself - he always looks bloody gorgeous!! Even with a tattooed, bald head, or lots of face fuzz - I can still see the Lij loveliness shining through - and as someone else remarked (can't remember who, sorry) he can't disguise those eyes (except when he wears shades!!). They are still those exact same eyes that bored into my soul that very first time I saw them - as Frodo leapt up from under the tree at the sound of Gandalf. I can understand why he wants to look older - he's been teased mercilessly about his youthful appearance and can't see this as the actual blessing it is. I do think he looks good with the beard, quite distinguished in fact - but he's only 25, there are plenty of years ahead to look distinguished, he doesn't need to do that yet. But if I could choose, I would always have him completely clean-shaven. His features are too beautiful to hide. The beard hides the lovely cleft in his chin, and the moustache encroaches onto that sensuous top lip. I have a thing about his top lip - when his face is in repose, not smiling, it is just - erotic is the only word that comes to mind. To demonstrate, I'm posting one of my favourite pics of Lij as himself, I find it mesmerising. I've had to scan it from the LOTR fan club mag 'cos the online versions aren't too good, and this scan doesn't really do justice to the pic, which in the mag is perfection. annwyn55 - I know you were feeling the need for pics like this yesterday - hope you enjoy. Keep scrolling down -I've posted two close-up scans - couldn't decide which one to post - plus a full-length version.

It's a long time since I've listened to Emmylou - and this one I'm playing is probably my favourite. With that pic of Lij & this song playing - I'm covered in goosebumps:)

Thanks so much, Not Alone. Yes, I did find pics, remembering that Bunnie was sure to have a bunch of pics, since she is always bringing them from her LJ to the messageboard I know her from. So I found her LJ and presto, dozens of Cannes pics.

I wrote to an e-friend who loves Frodo and has a soft spot for his actor, too, that he looks really different from his Frodo days. He has for a while, but the no-hair and the beard only underscore it. He looked like a youth, then. Now he looks like a man. As soon as I hear him speak, his mannerisms and style show he is unchanged. But, just to look at, he almost looks like someone else to me.

I wrote to this friend that seeing these pics reminded me of mothers who sent their teenaged sons off to be seamen or soldiers or painters off to study in Paris, who open the door a few years later to a man - familiar, but unfamiliar. "Is that my son? Where did he go? Who is this man on my porch?" They are proud, perhaps; impressed, but also taken aback, made shy. But then in another moment, there is the eye contact, the smile, the laugh, perhaps a hug - and by their sons' unchanged feelings, the mothers see the sons are still the same persons who left, at least, towards their mothers they are the same.

It's quite amazing the difference that a shaved head & a bit of face hair makes - when you consider how he looked in Punk'd which was only a few weeks ago - he does look almost like a different person. To me he looked so young in Punk'd that it reminded me very much of how he looked on the dvd extras during LOTR when he was only 18. I'm getting used to the new look, but hope it will only be temporary.

"seeing these pics reminded me of mothers who sent their teenaged sons off to be seamen or soldiers or painters off to study in Paris, who open the door a few years later to a man - familiar, but unfamiliar"

That's so true - when I first see pics when he's drastically changed his appearance, its "Is that my Frolijah?" but after a while I realise that all the familiar things I love about him are still essentially there, and, as I've said to others, I only have to look at his eyes & I see Frodo:)

Not alone, as an examplary EW fan, I am sure you have seen every Cannes pic that has been posted, but I wanted to link this set of four from Bunnie's Faculty post (which you certainly have seen, in that case).

http://www.khazaddum.com/forums/showpost.php?p=319682&postcount=68

I noted in the thread that the woman with him was stunning, loved her dress, etc. I hadn't known it was Pam until Bunnie replied. I didn't recognize her. I said in the thread I thought it was cool that he appeared with his lover as his date and not some starlet that Publicity might have provided for him.

I thought about those pictures of him and Pam all during the afternoon while I was doing errands. You know, because of the "vibes" in those pics with Pam, or the vibes I imagined, for the first time I saw him as a truly sexual person. I have seen AIW and loathed the kissing scenes in it, thinking, "Yech! I hope he doesn't do any love scenes again soon!" But that was then. Somehow, all during my haircut I kept thinking about him with his lover, what he'd be like in that part of his life. Not just the mechanics, but how he would speak, behave, etc.

I have never been interested in RPF, mainly because I just never could believe in him getting it on with his cast-mates from LotR (certainly not Sean A., whom I think a bit of an ass, however good he was at Sam), the people with whom he is typically paired. I'm not interested in reading about his one-night stands (imagined) with women, either. But I'd love to know what he's like with Pam, a woman he seems actually to love. Pretty nosey of me, too.

I guess what most surprises me is that in those pics with his real lover, for the first time, I saw EW not just as utterly charming, cuddly, beautiful, and etc. I saw him as desirable in the sense of being a sexy man. I have always thought his Frodo absolutely to die for, as you know. Bbut only in fanfic versions of film-Frodo have I found him "sexy," because he is shown experiencing erotic, sexually expressed love for someone else. Frodo I never have pictured feeling such feeings for anyone, not in the book or in the films.

I think I may have taken a stride in EW fan levels, if there is such a thing. I might begin to take the crotch shots in EW-fans' icons more seriously!

Whoopee!! Welcome to the club:D

I've never had any touble seeing him as a sexy man - as well as charming, cuddly, beautiful, and etc. - either as himself or as Frodo. He makes me completely forget how very ancient I am!!

But I'd love to know what he's like with Pam, a woman he seems actually to love. Pretty nosey of me, too.

I must confess that thought is very often in my mind too - and I can assure you we are not alone!! I hope she realises what a very lucky lady she is. And I really, sincerely hope she doesn't hurt him - he does seem to love her and he's been let down and hurt before.

The pics from Cannes are great, aren't they? And Pam does look very lovely in that dress & jewellery - but why oh why did she have to wear 4" heels? She is slightly taller than him, but doesn't usually tower over him that much:)

Oh, I love that she feels free to wear 4" heels. If he were not comfortable with her being taller, she would sense it and not wear them, just to make him feel better. That she does wear them says to me (unless EW is a masochist in relationships which I find hard to believe) that he is perfectly able to handle her being taller than he, even to find it attractive. I find that incredibly endearing of him. Perhaps I am prejudiced because I am tall. There were times when I was a young woman when some shorter man would show interest in me, but I would blow him off. Why? Unattractive? Unengaging? No, because I myself could not handle being seen in public with a man shorter than I, because I always felt self-conscious about being big and tall. So when I see her wearing the high heels, and he being [obviously] ok with it, I find that really sort of thrilling, vicariously. At least SOMEONE didn't fall into the conventional thinking that I did.

I think EW is probably used to most everyone he knows being taller than he, even women, the experience emphasized by spending so many years in mostly adult company as a child.

As for sexy, I know that many of his fans have found him sexy since forever, but not me. Only in his stills and photo shoots, when I could let my mind take off from his beautiful image, did I find him sexy. But he never behaved in the manner that those photographs implied. As soon as I saw him in an interview or something, all that vanished. He was just the "cute little guy" again.

Just discovered I'd forgotten to reply to this comment which I'd intended to do at the time!!

I'm sure you're right. Even as I wrote that comment I thought to myself "I'm probably worrying far more about this than he ever would". Sean Astin once said "Elijah is more comfortable in his own skin than anyone else I know". This certainly appears to be true and is yet another facet to his appeal. I doubt he even gave the 4" heels a moment's thought.

Except me!!! I'm not quite 5'2", same height as his sister. So to me - he is tall:) But not as tall as my husband - who is almost 6'. In my youth I used to get asked out by quite a few short men - they obviously didn't possess the same self-confidence that Elijah has.

Only in his stills and photo shoots, when I could let my mind take off from his beautiful image, did I find him sexy.

Although he is stunningly beautiful in photo shoots they are not actually my favourite pics of him. I much prefer the natural shots - not necessarily when he's being overly geeky - just those when he's being his natural self. And then, of course, there are the Frodo pics which just take his beauty to another level:)
