Subject:A JOURNEY WITH FRODO - CH : 12 ~ THE FILMING OF THE DEAD MARSHES
Time:01:30 pm
Current Mood:working
Just taking advantage of a quiet time at work to get this latest chapter posted. It may be a little shorter than most of the others - there doesn't seem to be a great deal of behind-the-scenes material for this scene and I did consider combining it with the next scene but that would have made it far too long. So, here it is CHAPTER 12 ~ THE FILMING OF THE DEAD MARSHESCollapse )

Many thanks - glad you enjoyed it. Yes, it was a wonderful scene in the film - so atmospheric - but they certainly suffered for their art!!

Dear NotAlone, these pictures and the text are an absolute joy to see. What an amazing crew, actors, adventure. It's wonderful to glimpse them again - and anew for lots of these are pics or words I hadn't seen.

I'm struck by the good humor and patience so obvious on the set; Elijah seems to greet that cold wet submersion with the same bonhomie that he brings to just about everything. What an incredibly special passage for him - and thank goodness for the way he and Sean and Andy - and the crew - brought these scenes to life. They look 'real' on screen - the 'making of' is almost as intriguing as the movie!

Thank you!!!

Thank you so much - I'm really glad you enjoyed it:)

Absolutely!! He's always so ready and eager to do what is asked of him and, whatever discomfort or even danger it entails, he is unfailingly good-natured - never a grumble, nor a whine, nor a frown - ever. He's amazing!!

the 'making of' is almost as intriguing as the movie!

I do agree - I'm sure the enjoyment I get from the behind-the-scenes stuff is equal to that I get from the actual movies:)

Many thanks - glad you enjoyed it:) I love the way Andy helps to wrap Elijah up too and I think it's probably typical of the way the cast and crew were on the LOTR set - considerate and helpful to each other.

You're right - Elijah does have lovely slim, shapely legs - I noticed them first in the pics from the Dragon Boat RAce when he was wearing shorts - I'm quite envious!! Hmmm, fishnets ... now there's an image worth conjuring with:D

What a great chapter! And what great troupers they all are! You can really see how much they love what they are doing - to be able to smile and laugh in the face of all that hardship. ♥ Thank you, my dear.

You're very welcome, Annwyn - glad you enjoyed it:) Yes, they were all great troupers - PJ has often said he purposely chose 'nice people' for this massive project - and he has been proved to be an excellent judge of character:)

I love it when you take advantage of a situation.

This is such a sweet and funny post! Waiting for another train to come, and Andy in his tight white drooled upon suit.

'Wrap him up well and send him to me.' NO!!
Wait a minute. It's Christmas time, people are supposed to be generous, loving, and so forth. O.K. He's yours. But just this once.

Anne

And: Bless the local farmers for warning them!

Oooh, thank you - I promise to take very good care of him:D

Yes - that's quite scary - those poor animals!! I remember a bit on one of the dvd extras when PJ tried stepping into one of the marshes and started to sink quite rapidly!!

What a gift you have/are giving us. Mere words cannot express the joy I feel in looking at these photos. Maybe we weren't there to create the magic, but you are keeping it alive in our hearts.

'Elijah Wood had been filmed suspended above a wind machine'

I wonder if Sean was present, to ensure all safety percautions had been taken? I can imagine Elijah, dangling above a huge wind machine with not a care in the world, and a worried Sean below, hardly able to watch.

Another great chapter of 'Journey,' Pauline. I love the scenes in the Dead Marshes ~ so atmospheric, and the behind-the-scenes pics make you realise just how much background scenery/painting was added in later. The water was real enough, though, and must have been freezing! Elijah certainly is game for anything. Like chickenlegs, I'm also touched when I see Andy (who must have been cold himself) helping to wrap Elijah up. Lovely.

Thanks for the e-mail. I'll write soon.

Take care,
Blossom.

That really made me chuckle - and I wouldn't be at all surprised if that was a very accurate account of what happened!!

Glad you enjoyed this chapter, Blossom:)

This was a TERRIFIC chapter, Not Alone. Do you plan to leave all these entries up indefinitely? I'd love to edit a reference to this post into my screencap post on the EE scene in the marshes (the one in which Frodo tosses the lembas, being rehearsed above), probviding a link to this post and so forth.

Once again, reading about the making of the scene, all the more am I in awe of the actors and artists and crew people that made these movies with they are. Thanks so much for a fascinating chapter of your series.

Many thanks, Mechtild.

Do you plan to leave all these entries up indefinitely?

Yes, I do intend to leave them up - although I've sometimes wondered if there's a limit to just how much LJ will allow you to post - I have so far to go yet!! I believe the limit may just be per month, in which case I'm ok, but if it's in total I could have a problem, but I'll deal with that if and when it happens!! Do you intend to leave your screencap posts up? I love to revisit them every now and then - and I know you've posted one on the Passing of the Elves which I keep intending to go back to as I didn't have time to absorb it thoroughly when I first came across it:)

all the more am I in awe of the actors and artists and crew

I agree - they were all awesome:)

Just looking at these pictures is enough to raise goosebumps - only this time, it's the c-c-cold kind!

I haven't read Andy's book, so that is an interesting insight. Gollum is so creepy; can you imagine looking into his face and seeing your future? These sequences must have been very difficult to pull off but the actors all look in good spirits. It's fun to see behind the scenes - thank you!

Yes, I feel quite chilly when I see pics of Elijah in that icy cold water!!

Andy's book is a good read - the work that went into creating Gollum is awe-inspiring. You've probably seen the dvd extra where they talk about a scene, which never made it to the final cut, where Faramir sees what Frodo will become if he keeps the Ring. It's scary. I will, of course, be including it when I reach that chapter:)

Thanks for commenting - glad you enjoyed it:)

Truly awesome pics and commentary---thank you! *pants at idea of Frodo getting his hair combed*

It's so easy to forget what a physical challenge these roles represented for the actors.

Many thanks - glad you enjoyed it:) Yes, I thought it was quite sweet to see the make-up lady trying to tame that unruly mop!!

You're right - because the finished product is so real, so believable, it is easy to forget about all the blood, sweat and tears that went into creating it:)
