Subject:A JOURNEY WITH FRODO - CH : 12 ~ THE FILMING OF THE DEAD MARSHES
Time:01:30 pm
Current Mood:working
Just taking advantage of a quiet time at work to get this latest chapter posted. It may be a little shorter than most of the others - there doesn't seem to be a great deal of behind-the-scenes material for this scene and I did consider combining it with the next scene but that would have made it far too long. So, here it is CHAPTER 12 ~ THE FILMING OF THE DEAD MARSHESCollapse )

At last, I've had a moment to read through this. You always bring so many things that I've never been aware of to light. This was fascinating. Thanks again!

Hi! I've only just stumbled across this amazing series. As someone who's loved the films and DVDs but only just discovered fandom, I especially loved the first few entries about the lead up to and the start of filming. How exciting that must have been! Anyway, I am absolutely loving these entries and I can't wait for any that may follow. I hope it's ok if I friend you?

I see I commented on this one before. Back again to say it made me feel just as awestruck as the first time. The Dead Marshes is one of my favourite sequences from the book and I was always wondering how they could bring it to screen. It is incredible to look at how it was done and what bravery and stamina it took from all the actors and especially Elijah, with being submerged, probably over and over. He showed utter faith in bestowing himself for whatever they wanted to do to him, managing to make it look effortless, even fun! But the emotional content of those scenes and the difficult filming conditions and noise distractions must have been hard. What a triumph it was to create what they came up with. I'm more than ever impressed with what the art department accomplished together with the digital geniuses who blended the sets and backdrops. I don't know how they got the mist, if that was real or applied, but the tone and menace of the scene is chilling and tragically sad. While I don't think any interpretations about Gollum were made by the producers that weren't in the book, it took a reading of great perception and actors of immense skill to convey all these shades of meaning, compressed in mere moments instead of chapters. I must read Andy's book, you have so many great quotes from him, and this was unique and groundbreaking stuff. He and Elijah seem to have had the greatest respect for each other. Like always I feel I'm 'right there', thanks to this incredible Journey.
